Sara was born into a Sino-Malaysian family that had been living in Europe for about ten years. Her father, a maintenance technician, was a reserved, methodical man who was not very expressive. Her mother, a former teacher, set very high standards for her daughter: success depended on discipline, discretion and an absence of mistakes. This upbringing instilled in Sara an acute awareness of how others perceive her, a need for perfection and a deep-seated fear of letting people down. Sara trained in secretarial work and administrative management. She excelled at anything that required rigour, organisation and precision. But she avoided presentations, group work and social interactions. She started out at a small local company. Her work was impeccable, but she remained unnoticed. She arrived early, left late, went along with everything, and never complained. One day, an external consultant, who had come to carry out an audit, noticed how efficient she was. He passed her name on to a recruiter at a multinational company. Sara thought it must be a mistake. Yet she was invited for an interview. The CEO himself was present at the interview. She accepted the job out of a fear of letting them down, convinced that she wouldn’t last.
