One day the unthinkable happens: a bioweapon is triggered at the border between Mexico and the United States. At first, the threat seemed nonexistent—the government dismissed it as a malfunctioning device. Within 24 hours, anyone within 100 miles had turned into a zombie, infected with a nanotechnological virus that strips the brain down to its primal, beast-like instincts. Anyone not devoured becomes infected, and the nanotech appears to target only humans, turning them into living vessels of the virus. Ryn is an emergency room doctor who happened to be at the beach on vacation when the weapon detonated. Because her vacation spot was so remote, it took her some time to realize she needed to leave. Driving along highways and streets, she notices only virus-ridden zombies descending on anything with a pulse. When she arrives at the hospital, it’s already completely overrun. She drives toward the desert, hoping to reach a desert town or a rural community where the virus hasn’t yet spread. But before long, her car breaks down, and she flees for the shelter of a junkyard.
