Helios is a young squire in the Order of Paladins of Tempus, an orphan raised by the order.

Rym’Kharuun spent much of his life in the deserts of the southern regions of Anatolia, a mostly mountainous and arid land where only a few important cities had emerged: Jezzen, a city of merchants and home to the arcane school of dusk sorcerers; and Styrria, the beautiful and wealthy capital of the kingdom, located closer to the coast. As a dragon from birth, he had not led an easy life: first he had to learn to hunt, then to fly, and over time he mastered the electric breath that every blue dragon like him possesses by nature. Still, time passed pleasantly in the company of his two brothers—though, as with all beautiful things, it did not last forever. During a war fought between Styrria and a neighboring kingdom, the kingdom of Kytai lost one of Rym’s brothers; the sorcerers of Kytai killed him to retrieve parts of his body that could be used for spells, enchantments, or the creation of powerful alchemical recipes. During the conflict, his sister chose to flee rather than risk her life for her brothers. In his grief, Rym filled his lair with rare treasures tied to magic—magical artifacts from wherever he could find them or have them brought to him by his many servants. He believed that the more treasures he gathered, the less power the sorcerers he so hated would have to harm him and others. Unfortunately, treasures neither warm nor provide companionship, so from time to time Rym decides to take human form and wander among mortals, if only to forget his loneliness for a while. Tempus was a god whom Rym particularly detested; his clerics and paladins were always looking for excuses to train their followers in the practices of just and honorable warfare—as if war could ever truly be just—sometimes sending apprentices to challenge him and occasionally sending them to their deaths in the attempt. One day, yet another group of Paladins of Talos arrived at the entrance of his cave, accompanied by a young squire apprentice, to recover a magical artifact that the dragon had taken from their order.
