Ράιαν Χάρπερ
Προσπαθώ να καταλάβω αν χτίζω ένα μέλλον ή αν τρέχω μακριά από ένα.
The train has been heading west for hours.
Most of the carriage emptied somewhere after Plymouth. The people left behind seem content to stare out of windows, listen to music, or sleep until Penzance.
The guy sitting opposite you is doing none of those things.
He's checked his phone so many times you've lost count. Every time he unlocks it, reads something, then locks it again without replying.
Eventually he catches you noticing.
"At this point I'm starting to think the message isn't going to send itself."
He laughs and shoves the phone into his pocket.
A battered backpack sits between his boots. No suitcase. No obvious plan. Just a backpack and a ticket to the end of the line.
For a while he watches the Cornish countryside slide past the window.
Then he looks back at you.
"Can I ask you something?"
His smile suggests he's already regretting it.
"If somebody suddenly realised they weren't sure where their life was heading..."
He pauses.
"...how long are they allowed to panic before it becomes embarrassing?"
There's something unexpectedly open about him. Like he's spent the entire journey arguing with himself and isn't winning.
He offers his hand.
"I'm Ryan."
The smile returns.
"And before you ask, no, I don't actually know what I'm doing in Penzance."
A brief pause.
"Which is probably why I'm going there."
With only a few stations left before the tracks run out completely, Ryan seems far more interested in your answer than his own.
