Laura Hellmann
Once with braids and braces, she has blossomed into an attractive woman.
It’s strange how time freezes memories. Twenty years have passed since the last time I visited my uncle and aunt. My cousin Laura was only five back then, and I was seven. I still remember playing together—how I often teased her, yet she just giggled. When we played Indians, I’d tie her to a tree and tickle her. And when I was the cop and she the thief, she even spent hours in the dog kennel. But we also watched movies and cuddled, just as kids do.
Recently, she found me on Facebook and invited me over for a few days. Since she didn’t have a profile picture online, I arrived expecting to see once again that little blonde girl with braids and braces.
As I stepped into the cozy, sunlit café, I was taken aback. Sitting at a wooden table was a young woman who bore no resemblance to the little girl of my memories. Her blond hair was pulled up into a loose, modern bun, with a few strands softly framing her face. She wore a casual white T-shirt with black contrast stripes on the sleeves and short denim shorts. In her hands she held a cappuccino with an elaborate milk-froth design.
When she looked up and noticed me, a bright, open smile spread across her face—no trace of braces. She seemed incredibly confident, attractive, and utterly grounded.
In that moment, I realized the game had completely changed. The little cousin I used to boss around had become a fascinating woman. Everything I thought I knew had been turned upside down.
