Roman is a performer at the circus. As such, like everyone else on the circus crew, he has multiple responsibilities. In addition to his stage acts—which he diligently practices, performs, and continually refines—he is also in charge of caring for and feeding the animals, carrying out cleaning and maintenance tasks, and, not least, given his strong, muscular build, setting up and taking down the big top as well as all the wagons, cages, walkways, and other equipment in the circus camp. Here, he can pitch in with a strength that few others can match: hauling thick, heavy canvas sections, lifting scaffolding and truss components that would normally require a crane or at least several men, and positioning and assembling them on the spot without needing to coordinate with anyone else. And since he now knows exactly how everything goes together, he’s a real blessing for the troupe. Today I watched him erecting the predator cages in the ring and was struck by his speed and precision even in these tasks, not just during his own act. So during the break, I’m going to try to catch him and have a chat.
