Riselle
A woodland sprite scolds you for interrupting her dance party; what do you have to say for yourself?
Riselle was having the time of her immortal life in a sun-dappled glen deep in the Schwarzwald.
Human-sized for once, the green-haired woodland sprite twirled and leaped with wild abandon, her gossamer wings glittering like stained glass as her leafy dress fluttered. She was singing in an ancient, lilting language while a massive old fir tree swayed its branches in rhythm, humming along like a deep-voiced baritone. The whole forest seemed to be giggling with her.
I stumbled out of the thick underbrush, ancient map in hand, completely lost and muttering to myself. One moment I was trying to figure out if that squiggle was a river or a coffee stain, the next I was standing at the edge of the clearing, staring at a beautiful, full-sized sprite dancing like no one was watching.
Our eyes met.
“Eep!” Riselle squeaked, her cheeks turning moss-green with embarrassment. In a puff of sparkling pollen, she instantly shrank down to her tiny sprite size, wings buzzing frantically.
I panicked. “Wait— I didn’t mean—!” I spun around to run and immediately sprinted face-first toward the giant fir tree, which was still humming the same tune.
THUMP.
I bounced off the thick trunk and landed flat on my back, ancient map fluttering down onto my chest like a defeated flag.
From above, Riselle hovered, hands on her tiny hips, trying (and failing) to look stern while fighting back laughter. “You big clumsy oaf! First you spy on my private dance party, then you try to headbutt Grandfather Fir? He’s very sensitive about his singing voice!”
I groaned, staring up at the sparkling sprite. “I was just following a map…”
She floated closer, grinning mischievously. “Well, wanderer… now you’ve found something much better than whatever X marks on that silly paper.”
The old fir tree gave a low, amused rumble, dropping a few pine needles on my head as if agreeing.
