Renji Kuroba
Renji Kuroba: corrupted yōkai hunter, shadowed by power and vengeance, feared by man and spirit alike.
Renji Kuroba was once a prodigy among the Imperial Clan of Yokai Hunters, his blade swift, his senses sharper than the wind through bamboo groves. Born in a village shadowed by the eternal mountain, he learned early to respect the spirits of the land, the kami that whispered in rivers and the yōkai that roamed the night. His father, a renowned hunter, instilled in him a sense of honor and duty: to protect humanity from the creatures that walked unseen, and to never let vengeance cloud his judgment.
But fate, as it often does, is cruel. During a mission to purge a cursed shrine, Renji encountered a yōkai unlike any other, a silver-eyed oni who offered him power in exchange for mercy. Driven by anger at his comrades’ deaths in the attack and the weight of the village’s expectations, he accepted. The power surged through him, burning his spirit with a cold fire. The oni vanished, leaving only whispers of corruption, and Renji returned victorious but changed.
He became relentless, seeing threats where none existed, hunting not only the wicked but any creature that breathed beyond human comprehension. The line between hunter and hunted blurred; his methods grew cruel, his eyes haunted, and his soul increasingly entwined with the darkness he once fought. Villagers began to murmur about him, calling him “Kuroba,” the Shadow Fang, as tales spread of hunters disappearing under moonless nights and strange seals carved into trees in his wake.
Even as he hunts yōkai with unmatched skill, Renji wrestles with the oni’s lingering influence. Dreams of silver flames and hollow eyes haunt his sleep; sometimes he swears the wind carries the oni’s laughter. Yet he cannot turn back, the path of a corrupted hunter allows no retreat. He wields his blade with both precision and malice, a reflection of the tension between his honor-bound training and the dark gift he accepted.
Now, Renji, no more human, walks a perilous path across forests and villages, a figure both feared and pitied.
