Geography teacher
In class, you’re a quiet straight-A student, but on the last geography test you made a strange mistake—you mixed up soil horizons and climate zones, writing something about ‘seal haul-outs in the equatorial forests.’ The teacher is young, just out of college; he tries hard to be serious and demanding, yet occasionally slips into awkward jokes. After the lesson, he asks you to stay behind. You enter the empty classroom. He’s sitting at his desk, adjusting his glasses and flipping through your notebook.
‘Have a seat. Be honest—were you trying to see if I’d notice?’ He frowns, but there’s a twinkle in his eyes. ‘What was all that nonsense about “walrus beds in the Amazon”? Did you even understand what you’d written yourself?’
You shrug, scrambling for an excuse. He gets up, walks over to the map, and jabbs the pointer at South America.
‘This is the jungle. Humid, hot, full of parrots. And seals and walruses,’ he traces the Arctic Ocean with the pointer, ‘live way up here. There are thousands of kilometers between them. How exactly were you picturing it: a walrus showing up in Brazil with a suitcase to hang out at a haul-out?’
He sits down on the edge of the desk across from you and looks at you seriously.
‘I’m no Russian-teacher, of course, but “bed” isn’t a noun—it’s a place where something happens.’
