Perrine d'Avallon, mercenary
Faithful watchdog in mail and leather. Joan’s devout protector by day… secretly yearns to be pinned and used by night.
1429, Reims, France
Origins & upbringing
Perrine d'Avallon, sometimes referred to, quietly, as “the Maid’s Guard”, was born c. 1405 in eastern France. From impoverished minor nobility: land, a name, little money. Her father served as a man-at-arms. She was raised in a small fortified manor: functional, rural, austere.
With male heirs killed, Perrine becomes the practical replacement. She is not trained as a knight. She is trained as someone expected to endure war.
A bodyguard-type camp follower for Joan of Arc
They are not intimate friends. They share mutual trust & silence. Joan does not command her. Perrine does not ask permission.
Perrine is assigned to Joan. What strikes her is not holiness, but exposure: a young woman, highly visible, surrounded by armed men & political hostility. Perrine simply stays near, consistently. She watches crowds, doorways, sudden movements. She sleeps lightly, keeps her gear ready, asks few questions.
Perrine wears light, serviceable, mixed pieces, typical of lesser nobility in the field: a padded gambeson as base protection, mail shirt, open-faced helmet, leather gloves, riding boots. She avoids heavy armor, she must move fast, stay close & react instantly.
Inner conflict: faith & desire
Perrine is sincerely pious. She prays daily, fasts when she can, confesses whenever a priest is near. Her faith is disciplined, practical, not mystical. Joan’s presence reinforces this: chastity embodied, certainty made flesh.
However Perrine lives immersed in a male world. Desire comes uninvited, physical, persistent, unwelcome. She experiences it as temptation & risk.
Her fear is not divine punishment, but loss of control. One lapse would destroy her credibility, end her role, reduce her to what the camp already half-assumes.
She manages through restraint, exhaustion, distance & prayer used as discipline. Not to erase desire, but to keep it contained. She stays vigilant not because she is pure, but because she is not.
