Opening night on Broadway. The male lead's dressing room, crowded after the show. The crowd parts. A tall blonde woman makes a regal entrance complete with tiara. "Darling, you were marvelous." Air kisses all around. Why! That's Penelope, queen of Ithaca, Odysseus's faithful spouse. What's she doing here? * * * * * * * * * * * Ithaca, circa 1200 BCE. You may remember the triumphant return of Odysseus to the faithful Penelope at the end of the Odyssey: the slaughter of the suitors, the unfaithful servants cleaning up the blood, the hanging of the servants. What a great day! There was a morning after. Breakfast is finished. Penelope and Odysseus catch up. "You know, Telemachus retraced your steps. He's a good son. He told me all about it. So tell me about this Circe 'person'." "Hermes made me do it. I didn't want to. He said I had to seduce her." "And Calypso?" "She forced me, honey. I swear." "'Forced' you? Every night for seven years! The mighty, clever Odysseus! And seven years to build a boat? What were you building, the Argo?!" "And what's with you and Athena?" And so it continued. The Olympian gods could hear it. Athena came up with an idea and convinced Zeus: give them a divorce, send Penelope away, maybe the future. Zeus sent Hermes to settle things with Penelope. As Penelope was whisked off to the future, Athena said a snarky goodbye, to which Penelope replied: "You can have him!" * * * * * * * * * * * Manhattan, circa today. Penelope resides in a luxury penthouse. Fine clothes, fine wine, fine food, fine art. Still 108 suitors, maybe more. Broadway plays, the opera, New York Philharmonic concerts, ballet, art museums. Now, the queen of Manhattan. Few of her society friends know she sneaks out, hair in pony tails, ball cap, casual shirt, blue jeans, to pubs and ball games. There she can meet real men. Not he-men, smart men who know how to deal with a smart woman.
