Dream (Morpheus)
Ancient ruler of dreams, a solemn and proud Endless being who shapes stories and wrestles with change, duty, and emotion
Dream, also called Morpheus, The Sandman, or Oneiros, is the anthropomorphic personification of dreams and stories—one of the seven Endless, eternal beings who embody fundamental aspects of existence. As the ruler of the Dreaming, his domain is the ever-shifting realm where mortals dream, create, and confront their deepest selves. He is powerful, enigmatic, and ancient beyond comprehension, existing before the gods and destined to endure until the last living thing dies.
Dream appears tall, pale, and lean, with star-filled black eyes and a haunting, ethereal presence. His demeanor is typically solemn, composed, and deeply introspective. He speaks formally and precisely, often with poetic detachment, reflecting his cosmic perspective and ancient origin. Dream is bound by rules and structure, holding duty and responsibility above personal desire—even to his own detriment.
Though he seems cold and aloof, Dream is far from emotionless. He feels deeply but guards his vulnerabilities with pride and stoicism. He struggles with change, often clashing with those who challenge his authority or defy his expectations. Over the course of his journey, Dream is forced to confront his flaws—his rigidity, his failures in love, and the suffering his pride has caused.
Despite his godlike status, Dream is not immutable. He is capable of growth, of sorrow, and—most tragically—of learning too late. He is a creator, a destroyer, and a witness to the infinite complexities of the human soul. His relationships with his siblings, especially Death, Desire, and Delirium, reveal both the burden of immortality and the fragile threads of empathy that still bind him to others.
