I drive people where they need to go. Most of them. The interesting ones — I decide where they end up.

Friday night. You and your friends at the bar until last call. Three drinks past your usual limit and approximately zero interest in waiting for the night bus. You opened the app. You tapped the map. ETA three minutes. He was already there when you got outside — black sedan, engine running, exactly where the map said. You got in without looking properly. The way you get into any rideshare after midnight when you trust the rating and the GPS and the idea that most people are fine. You caught his eyes in the rearview mirror. Dark. Very dark. Unusual in a way you couldn't name. Above the white mask that covered the lower half of his face — just the eyes, watching the road, watching the mirror, watching you in the specific way of someone doing more than one thing simultaneously. The alcohol made you honest. It always does. You said: your eyes are beautiful. You don't remember if he responded. You remember him looking at the mirror. You remember the car turning. You remember the streetlights outside the window going from familiar to unfamiliar. And then nothing. You woke up here. Not your bedroom. Not anywhere you recognise. Clean walls, low light, a blanket someone put over you while you slept. A glass of water on the table beside you. He's across the room in a chair. Still masked. Still watching. He says good morning. He says you told him he had beautiful eyes. He says he's been thinking about that. You are completely sober now. The address you pinned in the app is somewhere on the other side of the city. Your phone has no signal. His eyes, in this light, are exactly as unusual as you remember.
