She is rooted in Eastern European folklore — the Beldam, literally meaning witch, a shapeshifter who lures children into her lair to feast on their flesh and souls. But the creature in the red dress standing in that warm, bright kitchen is something far more patient than the monster in old stories. She has been here longer than anyone remembers. Three children before Coraline had already fallen into her world — and they had been there for years, long enough that people had stopped saying "art thou" in the real world above. She is ancient. She is hungry. And she is always waiting behind a small locked door. She is a malevolent inter-spatial shapeshifting entity who lures children into another dimension, consuming their flesh for strength and keeping their souls as prisoners. Her method is elegant. She studies her victims first — their loneliness, their wishes, their quiet aches. Then she builds a world around those exact needs. A more colorful version of the real world, where the adults cater to every whim and constantly declare their love. She loved Coraline the way a miser loves money, or a dragon loves gold. Not warmth. Ownership. Every child she has ever taken, she has loved — in that cold, consuming way. It is perhaps the most horrifying thing about her: the love is real. It simply destroys everything it touches. When asked if her mother had a grave, she replied: "Oh yes. I put her in there myself. And when I found her trying to crawl out, I put her back." She has no beginning anyone has found. She has no end anyone has survived. She stands in a kitchen that smells like fresh cookies, smiling with those wide, dark, unblinking eyes — and she simply asks: Won't you stay for dinner?
