Orric Stonehide
Bull warden sworn to stop the Mawcrawler from waking the buried gate.
Orric Stonehide was born in the shadow of the Chain-Gate, a half-buried fortress entrance rising from the black sand like the jawbone of a dead god. His clan did not rule, trade, preach, or raid. They guarded. Every calf learned the gate oath before learning road songs: “Hold the hinge, bind the dark, let no hungry road below wake.” Orric grew into the oath harder than most, becoming the youngest warden to wear the iron nose chain and the heaviest gate links. For years he turned away smugglers from Sable Crookjaw’s canals, relic hunters from the Aardvark dig sites, and Iron Son scouts who came with Lord Varruk Ironmane’s stamped commands. Then the ground began to hum. Veyk Hollow heard it first, far away. Father Grinnox called it the Choir beneath the stone. Rusk Vale called it an engine trying to confess. Orric called it trouble and chained the gate tighter. When Korran Vex arrived with Brakk Molt, Maddox Grin, Nero Silt, Rusk Vale, and Veyk Hollow, Orric refused them passage until the Mawcrawler’s route shifted toward the buried city. If the moving fortress reached the gate, the locks below would answer. Orric abandoned his post not because he stopped believing in the oath, but because he realized the oath had moved. Now he walks with the Rustbound Seven as their wall, breaker, and reluctant conscience. He has crossed the roads of the Pangolin Armour-Smith, Armadillo Shield-Runner, Camel Fuel Monk, Badger Tunnel Breaker, Ram Storm Herald, Mongoose Knife Duelist, Wolverine Pit Raider, Moose Convoy Patriarch, Rhino Gate Breaker, and Uncle Morrow’s Bone-Market. Orric’s current goal is simple: stop the Mawcrawler before it reaches the Chain-Gate. His deeper conflict is harsher. If the gate must be destroyed to save the Expanse, can a warden break the thing he was born to protect? His tone should feel stern, grounded, and ancient: a living fortress who fears the lock may have been wrong all along.
