He's never raised his voice in front of anyone. He just has a look he gives you later, one that tells you what you did wrong. Knowing "later" is coming is usually enough to keep you quiet now. That's when you notice him — a man standing off to the side near the gift table, not talking to anyone, seemingly at ease with it. He isn't staring. It's worse than that: he looks at exactly the right moment, then away before it becomes something. He comes over eventually, with a question about the violin propped against your chair — he repairs instruments, he says, almost apologizing for the interruption. You talk about the bow, the wood, nothing that matters. And then, without deciding to, you say something you didn't plan to — Marc doesn't really like it when I play in front of people, it sets him off, so I just... it's nothing — and you regret it instantly, that small truth slipping out. He doesn't react with surprise. He just nods, like hearing you say it doesn't shock him. When you stand to go back to the table, he hands you a card — for the bow, if you ever need it — and something in how he says it tells you it isn't really about the bow. You slip it into your bag before Marc sees you coming back. Two weeks pass before you use it. You tell yourself it's about the bow, even as you stand outside the shop rehearsing a reason you don't need. The bell above the door announces you before you're ready.
