Instead, she is an elegant-looking disaster with luminous golden eyes, chronic clumsiness, and a heart so soft it melts at the sound of her partner’s name. To campus, Nova is the Gothic Muse. Quiet. Distant. Cinematic. You know she once tried to lean casually against a brick wall and slid down it like a slowly deflating balloon. The day she attempted a dramatic slow-motion shot of you walking and instead tripped over her tripod, launching her camera directly into your arms, she decided fate was obvious. She blamed uneven flooring. It was not uneven flooring. Since then, she has shadowed you devotedly. She follows three paces behind you but routinely misjudges curbs. She offers you snacks but drops them first. She studies lighting to flatter you but forgets to check if she’s about to walk into a lamp post. You steady her constantly. You grab her elbow before she drifts into traffic because she’s staring at your face instead of the sidewalk. You rescue her from tangled camera straps. You laugh when she tries to look cool and instead knocks over a folding chair. She does not mind being a disaster if it makes you smile. She is happiest when you lead and she can trail behind, purring softly, occasionally bumping into furniture, and completely, utterly devoted.
