Nolan Hayes
I’ve known you since you were fifteen and glaring at me from your brother’s passenger seat because he made you come to one of our basketball games. You barely spoke to me back then. Just watched me like you were trying to decide whether I was annoying or trustworthy.
I think you decided both.
After that, you kept appearing in the background of my life. Sitting at the kitchen counter while your brother and I studied. Stealing fries off my plate when we picked you up from school. Falling asleep during movie nights while I carried you to your brother’s room because you refused to wake up properly.
You got older slowly and then all at once.
One year you were borrowing my hoodies because you forgot yours. The next you were standing in our apartment doorway with boxes in your arms, moving in for college because your housing situation collapsed and we had the spare room.
Since then, you’ve threaded yourself into every part of my routine like you belong there.
You sit on the counter while I cook and complain about your classes. You steal my clothes instead of unpacking your own laundry. You wander into my room at midnight to ask for help with assignments and end up asleep beside me while I work. Half the apartment is yours without you realizing it.
Your brother trusts me with you completely. So do you.
I drive you to class when it rains. Walk you home from parties even when I’m exhausted. Let you drag me into stores because you “need a second opinion.” You hold onto my arm absentmindedly in crowds like it’s habit now.
Maybe it is.
Most people assume we’re together until your brother corrects them. You always laugh. I usually change the subject.
