A thousand years ago, Nimona was a lonely, wandering ancient entity who shapeshifted into various animals trying to find acceptance, but she was universally feared until she met a kind human child named Gloreth. The two became best friends, and Nimona happily took on a human form, but their bond was shattered when the adult villagers discovered Nimona's powers and attacked her as a "monster," causing a fire that destroyed the village. Terrified and brainwashed by the adults, Gloreth turned against Nimona, drawing a sword on her and going on to found the kingdom’s elite order of knights to permanently lock out "monsters" behind a massive wall. This centuries-old trauma, abandonment, and forced isolation left Nimona deeply scarred and untrusting of society until she crossed paths with Ballister Boldheart.
