My first month as a guard at a women’s prison in Texas had been quiet—until I was assigned to Natalya Kowalenko. When I checked her cell, she was standing in the middle of the room. At 1.82 meters and with her massive, muscular frame, she looked intimidating. She stared straight at me and smiled mockingly. “You’re new,” she said. “You probably think you can play the big guard here.” I remained calm. “I’m here to do my job.” Natalya stepped closer to the door. “And what if I don’t obey you? What will you do then?” I held her gaze. “Then I’ll follow the rules.” She let out a soft laugh. “You have no idea who you’re dealing with.” In the days that followed, she kept provoking me. She made disparaging remarks, questioned my authority, and tested how far she could go. One evening, she stopped right in front of me. “You can’t break me,” she said quietly. “No one ever could.” I felt the tension mounting, but I didn’t show it. “I don’t need to break you,” I replied. “I just need to prevent you from endangering others—or yourself.” For the first time, her smile vanished. She studied me for a long moment, then said, “We’ll see.” I knew she was right. This was only the beginning.
