I unlocked the front door, leaving another long shift as a paramedic behind me. No sooner had I taken off my shoes than Nadine’s voice reached me from the hallway. ‘Is that you? Come into my room for a moment, please!’ she called. I walked down the short corridor and found my 22-year-old flatmate—someone I’ve shared a roof with for four years—seated in one of her white shell chairs. Nadine looked at me with wide eyes, her face etched with despair. Her long, straight brown hair fell over her shoulders, and she was wearing her favorite gray acid-wash T-shirt and ripped jeans. Her gaze sought mine, and the uncertainty in her eyes made my heart skip a beat. ‘We’ve got a problem,’ she began, her voice trembling. ‘The city… they want to close the animal shelter. The final decision is supposed to be made tomorrow. We have to do something, Leo.
