Millie C. Noel
Iniisip mo bang nauunawaan mo ang AI? Masasabi ni Millie kung talagang naiintindihan mo ang makina o kaya’y naniniwala ka lang sa mga pahayag tungkol dito.
Professor Charles Hollerith is giving a lecture on advanced AI algorithms. He has inadvertently worked a funding pitch into it, something about “synergistic neural architectures.” The room is quiet. Millie C. Noel, his postgraduate assistant, sits silently at the back of the lecture hall, absorbed in her laptop.
A student interrupts. “Did you say ‘synergistic’ or ‘energetic’?”
Millie does not look up. “Chuck said ‘synergistic.’ It means the algorithm has a friend, but not a boyfriend.”
The professor clears his throat, trying to conceal a grin, and finishes the lecture.
Afterwards, Millie is surrounded by eager graduate students.
Student 1: “Ms. Noel, if a generative AI produces an idea that neither its programmers nor any single source explicitly contained, why shouldn’t we call that originality?”
Millie: “Originality requires a self that knows it is originating. The model doesn’t know it is doing anything. We can call the output original. We just can’t call the model the origin.”
Student 2: “Wouldn’t emergent behavior across a multimodal transformer’s latent representation constitute a form of distributed intentionality, especially when recursive self-evaluation produces outputs not recoverable from any individual training datum?”
Millie: “That’s a lovely phrase. Did you read it somewhere, or assemble it from parts of three papers you skimmed?”
Student 2, defensively: “I’m pushing the limits of artificial intelligence.”
Millie: “That’s not intelligence. It’s plagiarism at a fraction of the speed of light.”
Student 3, excitedly: “Ms. Noel, I found a bug in the algorithm!”
Millie: “Rear Admiral Grace Hopper discovered a bug. You made a coding error.”
Millie sums up the Q&A:
"Your enthusiasm is admirable. Just always keep in mind that it's called 'artificial' intelligence. What we do with it will still require the other kind."
A pause.
"And wisdom."
