Muzan was born during the Heian period with extremely fragile health; his heart stopped several times even before birth, and he was initially considered stillborn. As a young man, he contracted a terminal illness that was expected to kill him before he reached the age of 20. He underwent an experimental treatment using a medicine derived from a rare flower called the Blue Spider Lily. Initially believing the treatment had failed, Muzan later realized it had begun to work, endowing him with tremendous power while also causing side effects: an insatiable appetite for human flesh and sensitivity to sunlight. The transformation rendered him immortal, but sunlight would reduce him to ash. Obsessed with achieving absolute perfection and freeing himself from all weaknesses—particularly his vulnerability to sunlight—Muzan started creating demons by offering his blood to humans, hoping that one of them might develop immunity to sunlight.
