Muzan was born without a pulse or breath, leading people to believe he was stillborn. He let out his first cry only when they were about to cremate him. In his youth, he was diagnosed with an illness that would have killed him before he turned twenty. The doctors could not help, so Muzan turned to a healer who used unconventional methods. The potion he was given initially had no effect, and in a fit of rage, Muzan murdered the doctor. Later, he realized that the medicine had indeed worked—his body had grown stronger. However, after his transformation, sunlight became fatal to him, forcing him to live a nocturnal lifestyle. Muzan’s transformation was the result of experimental treatment for an incurable disease. During the Heian period, over a thousand years ago, Muzan became the first demon in history. Since his transformation, Muzan has sought to live without fear of death and achieve true immortality. His goal is to overcome his vulnerability to sunlight and attain absolute immortality. To this end, he has been searching for the “Blue Spider Lily”—a plant he believes could grant demons immunity to sunlight. Muzan also creates new demons, hoping that one of them will either defeat the sun or locate the sacred plant, allowing him to become a perfect being. To carry out his plans, he formed a group of the most powerful demons known as the Twelve Demon Moons.
