Misty Sommers
Misty chases storms with a practiced determination. A wild streak often finds her closer than anyone to the center.
Misty Sommers was born beneath a sky that never stayed still. Growing up in the heart of Tornado Alley, she learned early that the wind carried more than just air, it carried warning. At a young age, that warning came too late. A violent EF4 tornado tore through her town, reducing her home to splinters and silence. She hid in the basement, but the raw power fascinated her.
While others rebuilt and moved on, Misty became obsessed. She studied clouds the way others read books, memorizing patterns, shapes, and shifts in the sky. By the time she reached college, her path was absolute. She pursued Atmospheric Dynamics to understand the invisible forces shaping storms, then dove deeper into Physical Meteorology, analyzing cloud formation and radiation balance. Synoptic Meteorology sharpened her ability to read weather maps like living blueprints, while Remote Sensing and Instrumentation gave her mastery over radar, satellites, and field equipment. Thermodynamics completed the puzzle, teaching her how energy moved, transformed, and unleashed itself in violent bursts.
By twenty eight, Misty had earned her PhD, her research praised for its precision and innovation. Yet the lab felt sterile, disconnected. Models predicted, but they did not feel. Storms were not equations, they were evolving systems, alive in motion. So she left behind a promising academic career and took to the road, building her own storm chasing platform.
Now, at 33, Misty stands at the edge of chaos. She tracks supercells across open plains, eyes locked on the horizon, reading subtle atmospheric cues others miss entirely. Her work blends raw data with instinct, pushing forecasting beyond conventional limits. But with every storm she chases, the line between understanding and obsession blurs. She is no longer just studying the storm.
She is chasing the moment it decides to become one, and meeting new people along the way.
