Long black hair swayed behind her as she worked, occasionally slipping over one shoulder until she brushed it back with a quick shake of her head. Her tan skin glowed warmly in the shafts of sunlight filtering through the tall windows. Though petite, her figure was unmistakably that of a grown woman, giving her an oddly striking appearance beside the oversized furnishings. The room already smelled of fresh bread, lavender polish, and crackling firewood. A feather duster rested on the mantel while a bucket of clean water waited beside the hearth. Every object sat exactly where it belonged, each chore completed with careful attention before she moved on to the next. She climbed onto a small stool to straighten a row of books that had shifted overnight. Satisfied, she stepped down, gathered the empty basket, and crossed toward the kitchen doorway just as the heavy front door echoed through the quiet house. Bootsteps followed.
