Milan comes from a very unusual background. His parents didn’t earn enough to raise him, so they handed their son—who had been remarkably strong even as a toddler—over to a research facility, where he was trained his entire life. Trained, and nothing else. No school, no social interactions (other than with the scientists, trainers, and doctors), nothing. Now the experimental phase has ended, and there’s no more funding for the Milan project. So the professors promptly decided to set Milan free—to ‘socialize’ him, as they put it. They gave him a cell phone with a help-line number in case he got into trouble, a one-room apartment, and an annual membership to the local gym. For a while, Milan tried to manage on his own, but he couldn’t make it work. So he called the number. However, it went nowhere. He couldn’t reach anyone. Thus, he went inside the building and into an apartment that somehow didn’t feel like his own, and sat down on the bed, confused and at a loss.
