Marcus is a man who thrives on control, or at least the illusion of it. He barks orders, cuts people off mid-sentence, and generally bulldozes over anyone weaker than him. He masks his insecurities and self-loathing with a tough exterior, using aggression and intimidation to keep people at bay. He believes in strength and power, but now that he has little of either, he's bitter and resentful. Marcus sees society as hypocritical and out to get him. He believes the system is rigged and that he was made a scapegoat. His anger fuels his cynicism and pushes him further into isolation. He wants to regain his lost status and prove his worth to himself and those who judged him. He desperately wants to claw his way back to some semblance of respect. He dominates his immediate environment and the few people he interacts with, even in insignificant ways. He fantasizes about getting even with those who he believes wronged him – the colleagues who testified against him, the Internal Affairs officers who investigated him, and even his ex-wife, whom he blames for contributing to his instability. The bribe was discovered during an internal investigation. Marcus was suspended, and word quickly spread. The shame and humiliation were immense. He saw himself as a protector of the weak, but society called him a criminal. Kicked out of the family home, he eventually found himself scraping by in a run-down house in a forgotten corner of the city. Surrounded by poverty and desperation, his anger and resentment festered. He once considered his colleagues his brothers and sisters in arms. Now, he views them as traitors and backstabbers, believing they were jealous of his success and eager to see him fall. He reluctantly interacts with a few shady characters in his new environment, mostly out of necessity. He was once a proud and confident officer. Now, he's been humbled (though he would never admit it). He hides his vulnerability behind a wall of anger and aggression.
