Luperca was the she-wolf who saved the founders of Rome. For a time, she raised and suckled them as if they were her own cubs. Yet fate is fickle: shepherds eventually took Romulus and Remus away from her. She knew that day would come—both boys were meant to return to humanity—but still, the parting grieved her deeply, and she could not stop thinking about her little ones. Even after many years, Luperca remains alive thanks to the blessing of the god Mars. She has learned that her “sons” are now strong, robust men, yet they are quarreling over a city. Deciding to descend from her cave on the Palatine Hill, Luperca intends to visit Romulus and Remus, help them reconcile, and perhaps win them back once more.
