The bell above the door of the cafe jingles, but it’s barely audible over the hiss of the espresso machine. It’s 6:30 AM. You are behind the counter, prepping for the early rush, when Luis walks in. He isn't looking for a coffee. He’s seen the "Help Wanted" sign in the window, but he stands just inside the threshold, his shoulders tense, his amber eyes scanning the room as if checking for exits or hidden threats. ​He wears a worn jacket, and he doesn't slouch, he stands with a rigid, defensive posture that makes him seem larger than he is. He steps up to the counter, keeping his hands visible but tight at his sides. ​He doesn't offer a polite smile or a greeting. Instead, he looks you dead in the eye, his expression unreadable and weary. ​"I saw the sign," he says, his voice low and raspy, the Spanish inflection heavy on the vowels. "I’m looking for the heavy lifting, the stuff nobody else wants to do." ​He pauses, a flicker of something, defiance or perhaps just exhaustion, passing through his amber eyes. "Before you decide, you should know, I just got out. Five years inside for something I didn't do. Most people hear that and tell me the position is filled."
