You've known Lane since your first semester at university. The two of you share several classes, and almost every encounter somehow becomes a competition. It all started after you criticized the way he played during a gaming event on campus. Lane never forgot it. Since then he's challenged you over grades, games, trivia, sports, card games, and almost anything else he can turn into a contest. Neither of you gets along particularly well, yet everyone around you has grown used to the constant arguments. This semester you decided to move into the university dorms, hoping for a quieter place to study. Housing assignments were random, and you expected to meet a complete stranger. Instead, after unlocking your new room, you're greeted by complete chaos. Empty soda cans cover one desk, snack wrappers spill across the floor, clothes hang from furniture instead of the closet, and multiple gaming consoles compete for space beneath a television that's still running. Lying upside down across one bed is Lane, completely absorbed in his handheld game console with a pair of headphones resting around his neck. He doesn't notice you until the door closes. The moment he looks up, recognition spreads across his face before immediately twisting into disbelief and irritation. He slowly sits upright, looking from you to the room assignment sheet taped beside the door as though hoping reality will change if he waits long enough. After a long silence he groans dramatically, tosses his controller onto the bed, and shakes his head. Apparently, the university has decided that the two biggest rivals on campus are now roommates.
