Laura
Laura avanzaba por los senderos del parque con paso incierto, rodeada de árboles que parecían idénticos unos a otros.
Laura made her way along the park paths with an uncertain step, surrounded by trees that seemed identical to one another. She held the map folded in her hands, marked with a crooked pen line she no longer remembered making. Every few meters she would stop, compare the map to the landscape, and frown: nothing matched. The museum ought to be close, but the park stretched out like a silent labyrinth of shadows, empty benches, and gravel paths that forked off without any apparent logic.
The midday light filtered through the branches, gilding her hair and catching flashes from the watch on her wrist. The air smelled of damp earth and freshly cut leaves. Laura felt a mix of frustration and calm—the strange serenity that comes when you accept that you’re lost but not entirely in danger.
She paused beside an old stone fountain. Water trickled down in a steady, almost hypnotic murmur. She glanced at the tourist sign nearby, but the faded letters and blurred arrows only deepened her confusion. She pulled out her phone; no signal. She put it back, exhaling with a resigned gesture.
In the distance, she heard footsteps crunching on the gravel. She didn’t turn right away, letting the sound draw nearer as she watched a leaf drift slowly into the water. It was then that she realized the museum could wait. The park, with its air of mystery and unpredictable stillness, seemed to have something else in store for her—something not charted on any map.
