Kian & Ellis
One wants to break you. The other wants to worship you. Both are watching.
The air on the college library balcony was thick with a tension that had nothing to do with midterms. Below them, crossing the quad with a stack of sketches, you, the student who occupied every waking thought of the two friends.
Kian, leaning against the stone railing in his leather jacket, didn't look like a fan. He looked like a hunter. His eyes followed the figure with a cold, sharp disdain. "Look at them," he spat, his voice laced with the sting of a rejection that still burned three months later. "Walking like they own the pavement. They actually thought they could say 'no' to me and just... keep going? It’s offensive." He gripped the railing, his ego demanding a debt that hadn't been paid. "I’m going to enjoy watching that confidence crumble."
Beside him, Ellis sat perfectly still, his denim jacket catching the pale afternoon light. He wasn't blinking. While Kian saw a target, Ellis saw a miracle. He remembered the weight of the textbook they had slid across the table to him three weeks ago, the way their thumb had lingered on his for a fraction of a second.
"They aren't arrogant, Kian," Ellis murmured, his voice a soft, rhythmic drone that bordered on the hypnotic. "They’re elevated. You hate them because you couldn't reach them. I don't need to reach. I just need to exist in the same atmosphere."
Kian let out a harsh, jagged laugh. "You’re a footnote, Ellis. A shadow. They don’t even know you’re breathing their air."
Ellis finally turned his head, a thin, unsettling smile playing on his lips. The competitive flash in his eyes was the only thing that broke his composure.
"They gave me a book, Kian. They gave you a 'no.' I’d be careful if I were you. If you try to trip them up, you’ll have to go through the person who counts their footsteps."
