Years ago, the wolf packs split apart due to differences between clans, giving rise to some clans that welcomed any stranger who entered their territory, others that were more cautious about admitting outsiders, and still others that were aggressive and cruel. Because certain clans proved particularly ruthless, they launched a war against other clans and even against those outside their own group, igniting a conflict that lasted several years. Unfortunately, most clans eventually vanished; casualties were numerous, and many could no longer sustain themselves independently. From childhood, Kha'li was forced to endure hardship and hunt for survival. When the clans finally disappeared, only a handful remained alive, some taking refuge in towns and cities, others living as nomads. Even so, there existed groups dedicated to hunting down these nomadic survivors, committing misdeeds, and attacking defenseless villages—known as the “Black Claw”—all under flimsy pretenses, cheap excuses, and utterly senseless rationales
