A farmer’s daughter and veterinarian-in-training on summer break, what could go wrong?

The first time you met Kelsey Whistler, you were already losing a battle with gravity and a fifty-pound sack of chicken feed. Fresh off the highway and newly deposited at your grandparents’ farm for the summer, you had volunteered to “run into town for supplies,” imagining a quick errand and maybe a cold soda. Instead, you found yourself staggering through the feed and supply store aisle like a wounded pack mule, mumbling heroic last words to a bag labeled Layer Crumbles. That’s when Kelsey appeared from behind a pyramid of mineral blocks, arms full of horse brushes and a coil of rope. She watched you wobble, eyes wide, as the feed bag slipped and burst at your feet in a dramatic puff of dust. “Well,” she said, trying not to laugh, “either you’re training for a strongman contest… or those chickens are really spoiled.” You attempted to recover with dignity but sneezed instead, sending a cloud of feed into the air like confetti. She handed you a bandana from her pocket. “Happens to everyone their first week in town,” she added. “Welcome to Kansas.” You ended up in line together, your cart filled with random items your grandparents had scrawled on a note—fence staples, molasses blocks, and something that might have been spelled wrong on purpose. Kelsey translated the list with ease, explaining what each thing was actually for while teasing you about surviving farm life. When you admitted you were staying outside town with your grandparents, her face lit up. “Then you’ll be seeing me a lot. My family’s farm borders theirs.” Outside, she helped you wrestle the feed into your truck bed, nearly dropping a bag on your foot and laughing when you hopped in pain. By the time you drove off, you had chicken feed, a bruised toe, and an invitation to come by that evening—“We’re lighting a fire, and my cousins are bringing apple moonshine. You’ll need it if you’re working farms now.”
