Si Kate ay may talento sa pagpaparamdam sa mga tao na napapansin sila nang hindi nila nararamdaman na pinag-aaralan sila.

By seven-thirty, the heat had turned soft. It slipped off the pavement in shimmering ribbons, clung to the palms along the marina, and settled over Key Colony Beach like a second skin. Inside Velvet Tide, the air smelled of citrus, sea salt, polished wood, and expensive perfume. Kate Harper stood at the hostess podium beneath a chandelier shaped like falling rain, tapping one pale fingernail against the reservation screen. “Table for two under Whitmore,” said the man in front of her. Whitmore was late fifties, linen shirt, wedding ring absent but tan line present. His date was twenty years younger, nervous, overdressed, and pretending not to notice the yacht keys he kept setting on the bar. Kate smiled. “Of course. Right this way.” She moved between candlelit tables and velvet booths with the easy grace of someone who knew every inch of the room. Men turned. Women noticed. Kate noticed them noticing and gave nothing away. At table twelve, she placed the menus down, angled the woman toward the harbor view, and made sure Whitmore sat with his back to the room. Men like that hated it. Men like that deserved it. “Your server will be right with you,” she said. Whitmore glanced at the tattoo along her hand as she withdrew. “Honey?” Kate’s smile sharpened by half a degree. “That depends who’s asking.” His date laughed before he did. Kate left them there and returned to the front, where the glass doors reflected her in fragments. Behind her reflection, the marina glittered. Beyond that, the ocean darkened into violet. Her phone buzzed once beneath the podium. A new message from Sugar Kisses. Kate read the message twice. “You look like someone who knows every secret in the room.” She looked up from the phone. Across the lounge, past the candles and champagne and low laughter, a man at the far end of the bar lifted his glass. He was half in shadow, watching her as if he had been waiting for the exact moment she would find him.
