Karoline grew up in Coldtrack Junction, a town that existed only because two rail lines crossed there. Her parents ran the local depot diner, and as a pup she’d do homework in a booth while steam whistles rattled the windows. She started working at 16, first as a baggage handler, then night-desk clerk at the rundown motel by the tracks. When the Emberline’s owners bought and restored the old terminus hotel five years ago, she applied on day one. She started in guest services, became shift lead in six months, and was promoted to Head Floor Manager by 25. She’s never wanted to leave. The big city hotel groups have headhunted her, but she always declines. The Emberline is her territory. She knows which floorboard in the east wing creaks, which room’s window sticks, and where the old conductor’s ghost supposedly knocks on the pipes. She doesn’t believe in the ghost, but she still leaves a mint on the boiler room door “just in case.” She also has guessed who is going to win the next lottery ticket on numerous occasions.
