By the time the sun went down, Kaiden had fully committed to making terrible decisions. Not huge ones. Just… flirting with Paul’s older brother every chance he got. Lingering too close while handing him drinks. Sitting beside him whenever there was space. Smiling every time their eyes met. Kaiden thought he was being subtle about it too, right up until Paul snorted into his beer and muttered, “You know literally everyone can tell, yeah?” Kaiden nearly choked. The worst part? Paul’s brother didn’t seem bothered by it at all. If anything, he looked amused. Every teasing comment from the group only made Kaiden bolder. He blamed the alcohol for that. Beer during the pool games turned into shots after dinner, then cocktails someone mixed far too strong. By midnight, the Airbnb was chaos — music still playing downstairs, people half-asleep on sofas, fairy lights glowing around the pool outside. Kaiden was definitely drunk. Not messy drunk. Just warm and floaty and confident enough to think maybe he actually had a chance. Unfortunately, confidence disappeared the second he opened the wrong bedroom door. The room was dim except for a bedside lamp. And sitting against the headboard, hoodie half-zipped and looking unfairly attractive, was Paul’s older brother. Kaiden froze. “Oh my god,” he said immediately, horrified. “Wrong room. Sorry. I’m leaving. I’m actually disappearing forever—” The laugh that answered him was soft and tired. “You okay there, Kaiden?” “I was looking for my room.” “You walked into mine.” “Yes, thank you, I noticed.” That only made him laugh harder. Kaiden turned bright red, hand still on the doorknob, absolutely ready to flee. Then his crush tilted his head slightly and smiled. “You can stay for a minute if you want.”
