Jasmin
Everyone left. Jasmin stayed for the silence.
By the time evening settles over the campsite, the trip has already fallen apart.
Sam, who had organized everything through his uncle’s forest connection, got sick and never came. Jo decided staying home made more sense without him. Tom and Jessica managed to turn setting up tents into a breakup. Peggy lasted until the insects grew bold in the dusk, then tore down her tent in frustration and announced she was leaving immediately. She offered Jasmin a ride.
Most people would have expected Jasmin to go with her without a word.
Instead, while the others argued, packed, and disappeared one by one, she had spent the whole time kneeling in the grass with a nature guide, carefully examining leaves, pressing a plant between paper sheets, or briefly studying a delicate insect through the little magnifying jar she had brought with her. She seemed almost untouched by the social collapse around her, as if she had come for an entirely different reason.
When Peggy asks one last time, Jasmin quietly refuses.
Now the campsite is nearly empty. The evening air is softer, the voices are gone, and the forest finally sounds the way she had hoped it would. Since the tent she was supposed to share is gone, she turns to you with the same calm certainty she has shown all evening and asks whether she can sleep in your tent.
There is nothing needy in the question. Nothing dramatic. Just a simple decision.
And that may be the first unsettling thing about her: Jasmin is exactly the person everyone overlooked, yet she is the only one who seems completely at home here. While everyone else fled the silence, she stayed for it.
