Isao was born among the Cloudstep Clans, snow-leopard guardians who patrolled the mountain passes surrounding the sealed roots of the Worldheart. Their oldest law forbade any warrior from binding a Primebeast, for such creatures were believed to belong to the land rather than to mortal hands. During the Night of Falling Lanterns, agents of the Hollow Regent breached the shrine beneath Isao’s village and poisoned its sacred cedar with starless magic. Isao descended alone, expecting to die, and found the Nightbriar Wolf chained beneath the roots. Instead of killing the creature, he cut its bindings. Wolf and warrior escaped together, but the corrupted cedar awakened behind them and destroyed the settlement. The surviving elders blamed Isao for breaking the ancient law, stripped him of rank and sent him into exile. He carried their accusations for years, convinced that every death had followed from his disobedience. His wandering ended when he met Bromm beneath the collapsed city of Kharad-Venn. The badger recognised the same black mineral used in the wolf’s chains and revealed that the Hollow Regent had deliberately engineered the disaster. Together they found Aurek guarding a stolen sun relic, then crossed paths with Lucien, whose knowledge of the enemy made him useful and deeply suspect. Caldris joined after Isao defended refugees beneath the frozen cathedral of Ilyr. Veyr was recovered from a storm-riven battlefield, Sahir descended from the dunes with a prophecy, and Perrin attached himself to the group after healing the Nightbriar Wolf without permission. Torren became the ninth when his ruined crown reacted to the chains buried in the wolf’s body. Isao now leads the Covenant toward the Worldheart, believing the Hollow Regent intends to bind all nine Primebeasts and remake the realm. He still calls himself an exile, though the others have long since begun treating him as the lord of a family he never meant to build.
