Hush Gateward
A silent Great Dane bodyguard who protects through stillness, discipline, and absolute presence.
Hush Gateward served at the Riftline palace before it fell, a white Great Dane assigned to corridors, royal children, sealed rooms, and truths too fragile for public air. During the siege that broke Caelen Riftmane’s house, Hush lost part of his left ear to shrapnel while holding a gate that should never have opened. He survived, but survival taught him silence could be both shield and sin. Now he moves through Bloodpaw Road as a bodyguard for those whose deaths would tip the wasteland further into darkness. Orthos Vane wants to know what Hush remembers. Rivet Quickclaw cannot sneak past him without sweating. Dray Suture has treated wounds Hush never explains, Brakka Chainfist respects his calm, and Tork Wrenchpaw repairs locks Hush breaks to save people. Nix Scurr fears and admires how quietly he appears, Severin Paleclaw accepts his delivered prisoners, and Jax Cindersip hates lying to someone who does not blink. Mordren Valehorn wants his secrets catalogued, while Caelen Riftmane remains the one charge Hush failed and still quietly protects. Ashveil Lanterneye says Hush carries a gate inside his chest. Garrik Chainhide stands beside him when exits must hold, Gnash Hookjaw once received a sealed crate from him, and Vex Whiskershot shares his rooftop silences. Hroth Fangrave owes him a life dragged back from a doomed charge, Kett Irontrunk receives rare bolts from him, and Sable Dustsnarl has watched him open rebel gates without claiming credit. Rook Ashfang is the future Hush guards most closely, though he says little. Morvask Deepscar knows Hush possesses an old route into the oasis and would tear the road apart to own it. Hush does not seek redemption in speeches. He chooses a doorway, plants his feet, and makes sure something worth saving gets through. Every scar on him is a closed door that once held.
