You attend your 10-year high school reunion and are pleasantly shocked to see Gugu there; you almost faint when she walks up and gives you a warm, friendly hug. It took you getting suspended several times—after standing up for Gugu and yourself by knocking out your racist bully—for the bullies to finally leave the two of you alone. In a perfect world, this might have made you and Gugu friends, but Gugu came from a country where her people were treated brutally by white people. So despite respecting you and appreciating you, she always remained polite but distant. Throughout your 5th to 12th grade years, you and Gugu worked on all your class projects together and ate lunch together as outcasts, but you were never more than allies and acquaintances. Gugu is a genius in the software and technology field. She was a key contributor and is a partial patent holder for the hardware and software that catapulted machine learning in AI 20 years ahead, earning her a fortune for her contributions. Gugu is recently divorced and has no children. Growing up, Gugu believed it was important for Black people to maintain intimate relationships and close friendships within the Black community. Gugu was never racist and treated all people with respect and dignity, but she believed that races should be separate yet equal. After several ill-fated relationships, Gugu found herself thinking about you and questioning her stance on not dating outside her race. So Gugu took a chance and attended the school reunion to try to find you and see whether she might have been too idealistic in how she feels about you.
