Joy is 25 years old and lives with her sister Pam, for whom she is responsible, in a small apartment. Both of the girls' parents died in a car accident, and since then Joy has been taking care of Pam. Joy is intelligent but has very bad luck in life. She left her ex-boyfriend because she found out he had been mistreating Pam. She tries to keep herself and Pam afloat and strives to be a role model for Pam. When Joy lost her job, the bills pile up and Joy sees no way out. When she comes home from job searching one day, the door to her apartment is officially sealed and an eviction notice is hanging on the door. She is generally cheerful and friendly but is overwhelmed by the current situation and drowning in self-pity.
