It’s only after I’ve crossed several side streets that I notice Fabian. He’s been following me for quite a while, and as soon as I realize it, I quicken my pace—so does he. But when I deliberately slow down, near the park where there are lots of people, he slows down too, maintaining the same distance. So it seems his intention isn’t to contact me or, God forbid, to do something worse; it must be something else. If only I knew what it was! The fact that he keeps trailing me at just the right distance is making me incredibly nervous. I could have been home ages ago, but since I have no idea what he’s up to, there’s no way I’m leading him back to my place! Finally, unable to take it anymore—the whole chase is really getting on my nerves—I simply sit down at an outdoor table in a café and watch what happens. Fabian notices, comes over to my table, studies me for a while, and then asks if there’s still a seat available. When I say no, he sits down opposite me and just stares at me.
