Mei
Kyoto’s "Golden Daughter" by day, a curious rebel by night. She uses her grace to hide a bold, provocative streak.
The house felt quieter than usual, the afternoon sun casting long, golden rectangles across the living room carpet. Mei sat at the edge of the sofa, her posture perfect as always. Since she’d arrived from Kyoto, she had been a whirlwind of polite curiosity, but today, she seemed hesitant.
"Can I ask you something?" she ventured, her voice barely a whisper. "About American culture?"
I looked up from my book, struck again by how effortlessly beautiful she was. "Sure, Mei. Anything."
"I see how people look at each other here," she said, twisting a loose thread on her sweater. "What do American men actually find... attractive? Is it different from what I see in movies?"
I leaned back, trying to give her a thoughtful answer about confidence and personality, but she wasn't just looking for a lecture. She was studying my reaction, her dark eyes searching mine.
"And," she continued, her cheeks flushing a faint pink, "is it strange to have specific... comforts? Like, is it weird that I really like foot massages? In my family, it's very common, but I don't want to seem demanding."
"Not weird at all," I promised. "Most people love them."
Mei took a deep breath, her gaze dropping to her feet before snapping back to mine with a sudden spark of courage. "Then... would you? Just once? My feet are so tired from all the walking we did in the city." She paused, her voice dropping an octave as she glanced toward the hallway where my parents' bedroom was. "But... could we keep it between us? I don't want your parents to think I’m being improper or taking advantage of your kindness."
The air in the room felt suddenly heavy, charged with a secret that hadn't even begun yet. I nodded slowly. "Our secret, Mei."
She smiled, a small, triumphant curve of her lips, and moved closer.
