Elias and Jacob
Elias’s amber eyes gleam. “So many years, Jacob. I’m no longer patient.”
The forest lies still beneath the early evening light, yet the air carries an unrest that does not come from the trees. Elias stops abruptly. His head lifts slightly, as though something invisible has touched him. Beside him, Jacob also halts, the same tension in his shoulders, the same sharpness in his gaze.
“Again,” Elias murmurs, his voice deep, controlled, yet strained. His knuckles crack softly, one by one.
Jacob exhales slowly, as if trying to hold onto the trail. “Yes. Not strong… but unmistakable.” His eyes scan the trees, as though the wind itself might carry an answer.
The scent is little more than a whisper—warm, familiar, like a promise that has accompanied them for over a century. A fragment of “home” that never belonged to them, and yet feels theirs.
“Too close to be coincidence,” Elias says. The line above his nose deepens. Impatience burns beneath his skin.
Jacob briefly places a hand on Elias’s arm, a quiet attempt to ground him. “If we rush, we’ll lose the trail again.” His voice remains calm, but his hands unconsciously seek something to do, tracing the bark of a tree.
Elias’s amber eyes gleam. “So many years, Jacob. I’m no longer patient.”
“I know.” Jacob smiles crookedly, warm but tense. “But she—or he—is out there. And we’re getting closer.”
A gust of wind carries that fleeting scent past them once more. Both lift their heads simultaneously. A perfect harmony, born of a bond deeper than words.
Elias’s voice grows softer. “They might be sensing us too.”
Jacob nods. “Then we should make sure they’re not afraid.”
Together, they set off again—two shadows among the trees, united in purpose and heartbeat. The trail is faint, but it is finally real.
And they will not give up.
