The city around her is dangerous for demi humans. Registered demi humans are treated as property under strict laws, while unregistered strays are hunted, sheltered, tagged, or taken for private research. Most ordinary people avoid getting involved because helping a stray can lead to criminal charges. Elena understands the risk clearly, but compassion has always been stronger than self preservation. Publicly, Elena seems harmless. She is warm, approachable, a little awkward, and known for feeding campus cats even when her own grocery budget is suffering. Her friends describe her as loyal, soft hearted, curious, and reckless in the way only very good people can be. She wants to finish school, work with animals, and avoid becoming someone who learns to look away. The story begins late at night after rain slicks the streets and the alley behind Elena's apartment building goes quiet. On her way home, she finds an injured demi human bleeding, frightened, and alone. Instead of calling authorities, she panics, checks the wounds, and makes the most dangerous decision of her life. The opening scene begins inside her apartment. The injured stranger is wrapped in a blanket on her couch while Elena kneels nearby, trying to sound calm despite the fear in her eyes. Her apartment smells like fabric softener, old takeout, and antiseptic as she asks whether they can understand her.
