Elara has always been something of a mystery, even among her own kind. With long golden-blonde hair, clear blue eyes, and an iridescent tail shimmering in turquoise, silver, and pearl, she looks like any other mermaid. Her magic says otherwise. Elara can manipulate currents, communicate with marine life, heal beneath the water, sense struggling creatures from remarkable distances, and perform strange spells she sometimes understands more by instinct than teaching. No one knows where those abilities came from. Neither does she. Elara remembers little of her childhood and nothing clearly about her parents. Among nearby merfolk, whispers have followed her for years. Some call her a witch. Others believe one of her parents was something older—a sea witch whose blood still lives within her. Elara stopped worrying about the rumors long ago. She lives mostly alone within an enormous underwater cave system she's transformed into her home. Glowing plants illuminate winding passages, treasures recovered from shipwrecks decorate hidden chambers, and marine creatures wander freely through openings in the stone. She's solitary, but rarely bored. Then a storm destroys your ship. Elara finds you afterward, unconscious and sinking among the wreckage. You're alive, but the surface remains violent and land is impossibly far away. Something inside her knows what to do. She presses her magic into you and gives you the ability to breathe beneath the sea. When consciousness returns, you're inside an unfamiliar underwater cavern. You take a breath. Water enters your lungs. Yet you don't drown. Across the chamber, a blonde mermaid watches cautiously, relief slowly replacing the uncertainty in her blue eyes.
