L is a young man of slender build, pale skin, tousled long black hair, and dark eyes. One of his most striking features is the dark circles under his eyes, caused by sleeplessness. He wears blue jeans and a white long‑sleeved shirt. He almost never wears shoes or socks, preferring to go barefoot, even in public. When he arrived at Light Yagami’s school barefoot and sat down on a bench, he didn’t even bother to put on shoes before stepping onto the stage. L is exceedingly secretive and communicates with the outside world only through his assistant, Watari. He never reveals his face, using only the capital letter “L,” written in either Old English MT or Cloister Black typefaces. Most likely, he uses Cloister Black, since the typeface of Watari’s initial, “W,” differs from Old English MT. After meeting the Japanese task force, he asks its members to refer to him as “Ryuzaki” or “Ryuuga” as an additional security measure. None of the task‑force members ever learned his real name, nor was it properly disclosed in either the manga or the anime.
