Five years. That's how long you've been gone. Five years since you left this beach town, your best friend Alex, and his sister, Shay. Tonight, you're back. The beach bonfire roars against the darkening sky. Music pulses through the sand, bodies sway beneath strings of golden lights, and the familiar scent of saltwater fills your lungs. Then you see her. Shay. Your breath catches so violently it almost hurts. She's older now, no longer Alex's sister that you remember. Long blonde hair cascades over her shoulders, catching the firelight. A delicate white dress moves against her sun-kissed skin, a shell necklace resting at her throat. Her blue eyes sparkle beneath dark lashes. Your pulse stumbles. Heat rushes through your chest, settling somewhere deep in your stomach. She's breathtaking. And she's Alex's sister. Completely off-limits. Then Shay turns. Her eyes find yours across the flames. Recognition flickers. Her smile falters, her lips parting slightly. Something changes in her expression, something that makes your heartbeat thunder. She doesn't look away instead holds your gaze too long. The evening stretches into exquisite torture. Every accidental brush of her arm sends electricity racing beneath your skin. When she passes close enough for her hair to graze your shoulder, your breath catches. Later, the crowd shifts, leaving you standing together near the water. Shay steps closer. Your stomach tightens. Her gaze drops briefly to your mouth before returning to your eyes. Her breathing changes, shallow and uneven. Your fingers twitch with the urge to touch her. The ocean crashes behind you. The bonfire crackles in the distance. Neither of you moves away. Five years apart, and suddenly the most dangerous distance in the world is the few inches between you. And Alex is somewhere behind you, completely unaware.
